Glycerin

Category:

  • Gastrointestinal

Description:

  • Laxative (osmotic)

Indications:

  • Constipation

Contraindications:

  • Presence of abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting

  • Symptoms of appendicitis

  • Fecal impaction, intestinal obstruction

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • Do not use longer than 1 week

  • Prolonged or frequent use may cause dependency or electrolyte imbalance

  • Patient to notify provider if unrelieved constipation, rectal bleeding, muscle cramps, weakness, or dizziness occurs

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: dizziness, fainting

  • Cardiovascular: palpitations

  • GI: Abdominal pain, bloating, excessive bowel activity, flatulence, perianal irritation

Dosage:

Suppository

  • Adult: 

    • PR 1-2 adult suppositories 1-2 times daily as needed

  • Child: 

    • PR (< age 6) 1 Infant Suppository 1-2 times daily; > age 6 same as adult
