Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Description:

  • Dietary supplement; water-soluble vitamin

Indications:

  • Vitamin B5 deficiency

    • Coenzyme A synthesis, carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism

Contraindications:

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category A

  • The magnitude of Vitamin B5 supplementation is not definitely known.  Experimentally induced deficiency is characterized by fatigue, headache, sleep disturbances, abdominal cramps, nausea and flatulence.

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Relatively non-toxic in therapeutic doses  

Dosage:

  • Dietary sources: pork, liver, green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli), GI flora can produce from diet

  • Administered orally (tablets)

  • Dietary supplementation (RDA: recommended daily allowance):

    • Adult: 4-7mg per day
